Tasting - First Light Moscato

Name: First Light Moscato
Variety: Moscato
Region: Angaston – Southern California
Country: United States
Year: N/A
Price: $7.95

Winery Review: Ripe lychee, tropical fruits and musk on the nose as you near the glass. Lovely grape and stone fruits and on the palate is highlighted with the subtle sweetness and spritz that makes this such a fun drink. Low in alcohol and nicely balanced acidity ensures you will want more than one glass of this easy drinking wine.

My Review: The nose smelled of sprite and skittles candy combined. I thoroughly enjoyed this light dessert type wine. I could see mixing this with other ingredients to make a refreshing sangria on a hot summer day. The spritz gave it a nice tickle on the nose but there was a surprising dry finish that left you wanting more.

I tried this wine without any food.

Tasting - CalNaturale Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles

Name: CalNaturale Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles
Variety: 95% Cabernet Sauvignon & 5% Viognier
Region: Paso Robles - California
Country: United States
Year: 2009
Price: $10.95 – 1 liter

Winery Review: This certified organic winery produces outstanding quality at reasonable prices offering classic Cabernet flavors of fresh herb, olive, cedar and cassis. Focused and intense, with a charming rustic side and broad tannins that firm up on the finish.

My Review: Herbaceous nose and the palate suggested the same. I would compare this to making a fresh salad and then taking a handful of dirt and adding it in as toppings. This was too earthy for my taste and I couldn’t think of anything that I would pair it with and enjoy it. The pepper pushed through on the finish.

Tasting -Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau

Name: Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau
Variety: Nouveau
Region: Beaujolais
Country: France
Year: 2013
Price: $7.75

Winery Review: An aromatic red with floral and white peach notes accenting the black raspberry and plum flavors. This is open-knit and fresh, offering light tannins on the finish.

My Review: These young grapes gave a lovely hint of olives and darker fruits on the palate. The nose was vegetal but the tannins were too overpowering for my taste.
Tight and dry finish.

Tasting - Beltrame Fiulano

Name: Beltrame Friulano
Variety: 100% Tocai Friulano
Region: Friuli
Country: Italy
Year: 2009
Price: $9.95

Winery Review: Straw-coloured yellow with a pale green tint express an intense, delicately aromatic and floral bouquet. The flavour is dry, soft, slightly fruity, with slightly bitter nuance in its almond aftertaste, and suggestion of peach.

My Review: Color was a strong indicator that this would be an enjoyable wine. This had a fuller feel than the previous wine, with a nice balance. There was more fruit on the nose with hints of honeysuckle on the palate.

I tried this wine without any food.

Tasting - Mas Llunes Maragda

Name: Mas Llunes Maragda
Variety: 100% Grenache
Region: Emporada
Country: Spain
Year: 2010
Price: $9.95

Winery Review: This Grenache Blanc is exquisitely sculpted with sharp acids and pinpointed minerals, and offers orange, melon and vanilla-honey flavors. A delight to drink, at a great price.

My Review: The nice golden color was a delight to see when it was first poured. This wine had a long nice finish that lasted for about 30 seconds. It was extremely acidic and dry with a crisp edge at the end. Strong melon on the nose.

Tasting - Blush

Name: Blush
Variety: Rosé
Region: Texas
Country: United States
Year: 2010
Price: $9.95

Winery Review: Bizarre blend of sweet and fruit forward flavors. This is not a wine that we normally let the public taste because it doesn't have distinct characteristics that we normally like to feature but for a sweet after dinner wine, this would do the trick.

My  Review: This wine had a beautiful fruit bouquet. I would compare this to receiving an "edible arrangement" of only strawberries and honeydew. The fruits smelled sweet but fresh and the honeysuckle pushed through tremendously. The taste had a crisp and sweet finish that would pair well with a light summer salad with poppyseed dressing.
I tried this wine without any food.

Tasting - Baron des Chartron Bordeaux Red Blend

Name: Baron des Chartron Bordeaux Red Blend
Variety: 60% Merlot & 40% Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: Bordeaux
Country: France
Year: 2009
Price: $9.95

Winery Review: On the nose there are freshly crushed red berry fruits with a minty fresh component, hits of gaminess, concentrated cassis fruit juice, balsa wood and underlying notes of violets. There is good extract of red fruits dominated by red cherries, spice components, then some good fruit-driven mineral notes.

My  Review: I was not a fan of this wine at all. I believe it needed to open up a bit more before it was tasted. I didn't get much off the nose as far as the fruits were concerned as they discussed. The tannins were overpowering and it was so dry that it immediately made my mouth water with no relief. I don't believe it would ever taste well on its own without a complimentary dish.

I tried this wine with sweet Swiss cheese and it helped to cut the acidity tremendously.

Tasting - Mad Hatters' Malbec

Name: Mad Hatters' Malbec
Variety: 100% Malbec
Region: West Coast
Country: South Africa
Year: 2012
Price: $11.94

Winery Review: A fruit-forward Malbec with round grape flavors and an earthy, mineralic quality balanced with a mild acidity and tannic presence.

My  Review: The smell mimicked that of a horse barn. My family owns a barn and it reminded me of the leather used for saddles and the oaky sawdust that is overwhelming when you step through the doors. The plum and dark fruit accents were obvious with a strong tannic and acidic finish.

I tried this wine without any food.

Tasting - Riebeek Cellars Sauvignon Blanc

Name: Riebeek Cellars Sauvignon Blanc
Variety: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Swartland
Country: South Africa
Year: 2012
Price: $10.95

Winery Review: Made in a definite herbaceous style, this Sauvignon Blanc also offers tropical undertones of gooseberries that add fruit to the palate. Well-balanced with zesty acidity, every glassful is fresh and crisp and perfect for warm summer days. Very refreshing on its own and lovely with crisp salads, light seafood dishes, tapas, steamed green asparagus and aioli.

My  Review: Immediately on the nose I could tell that this was a classic Sauvignon Blanc. The taste was extremely crisp and cut right through to my midpalate with the acidity. However, the acidity wasn't overpowering and did not make the wine feel hot.  I could tell on a warm summer's day, as they explained, this would have the perfect effectiveness of a crisp and sharp finish to round off light meals.

I tried this wine without any food.

Tasting - Copper Ridge White Zinfandel

Name: Copper Ridge White Zinfandel
Variety: Non-Vintage Blended
Region: California
Country: United States
Year: 2012
Price: $7.95

Winery Review: A crisp and light-bodied wine with a rose color, a delicate bouquet of strawberries and a clean finish. This wine strikes harmonious balance of acidity, sweetness and crisp finish.

My  Review:  This was an extremely fruit forward wine on the nose. For a White Zin, it was much smoother than the normal dry and acidic feel. The strawberries tasted as if you had cut up a fresh batch from the field and dipped them individually in sugar. Distinct flavors, yet nicely blended with full body.

Attimo Winery Visit

Valentine's Day would be nothing without wine. For my present (which I specifically asked for from my sweetheart), we visited the Attimo Winery this past Saturday afternoon. Driving through the snow covered hillsides, I couldn't imagine a better way to spend my Valentine's Day weekend.
We were lucky that the driveway to the winery was even cleared. However, we immediately got to experience the beautiful scenery.
When we first arrived to the winery, you could see where the vines grow each year. Even though they were covered with snow, I could tell that this would be a magical place to spend a spring afternoon getaway.

The tasting room had a feeling I don't know how else to explain other than, welcoming.
After we arrived, we were not quite sure which building was the tasting room. However, once I spotted the cute flag that was out front explaining how it was "Wine Time", I knew we were in the right place.
This was "The Flight" wine tasting option that my sweetheart chose. He chose After Midnight, Sunset Berry, and Sudden Downpour.
Once seated, the staff was delightful and explained all of the different options that we had to chose from. Since it was my Valentine's Day present, I had the opportunity to partake in the full wine tasting that included eight wines of my choice. My boyfriend on the other hand participated in what they called a "flight". This type of wine tasting is when you chose three wines to sample, but you receive full glasses for each. He chose three of the sweeter/fruitful style wines. Both tastings cost $5, but one of us had to stay sober enough to drive home!

Attimo, means "moment" in Italian. Therefore, the waitress explained that each wine of theirs is named after a particular moment in time.
These were my choices for the wine tasting. The wines on the right were an extra $1 per wine, because they were considered "reserves".
At many of the tastings that I have been a part of, I have never gotten the opportunity to sit down and enjoy a meal while trying these wines. At Attimo, we chose three appetizers that we thought sounded good and had the chance to taste these wines with each separately.

We chose the homemade meatballs, bread with dipping oil and Gouda cheese, and hummus filled cucumbers with cherry tomatoes. All three appetizers were delightful.
For my tasting, I chose eight wines that I want to share with you separately in a list form. They were extremely busy and the atmosphere was so elegant that I did not want to ask to take a picture of each wine, but I will describe them each briefly.

1. Yesterday's Song - Chardonnay
-This wine sat in oak for 3-4 weeks, with a light fruity yet floral nose. I could taste the butter pushing through with a crisp citrus finish.

2. Sonnet 98 - Vidal Blanc
-They described this as a dry wine but I must say that I felt the first wine was much drier. It had a grassy meadow nose with a smooth mid-palate. This would be a great wine for a spring picnic.

3. Off-the-Cuff - Riesling/Chardonnay
-I enjoyed this wine from the bouquet to the smooth finish. This would be great to take to a dinner party or give as a gift for those who enjoy light white wines.

4. I Do - Traminette/Petit Mensang
-The smell of this wine was of Valentine's Day lollipops. It had a sweet honeysuckle bouquet along with a bite at the very end (almost as a surprise), with hints of tropical fruit. This wine is used for many weddings.

5. Just Kissed Blush - Vidal/Raspberry
-I chose to take this wine home with me. The smell was as if I broke open a mango and put my nose straight into it. This would make for a great base for Sangria, and the fruits did not make it too sweet for a dinner wine. This would pair well with lighter green salads and vegetables.

6. After Midnight - Merlot/Blackberry/Zinfandel
-Even though the description said that it was a sweeter red, the black pepper was obvious on the nose. The first sentence out of my mouth was, "Holy wow!" I don't even know if that is a sentence. This wine contradicted itself and I was impressed.

7. AD 325 - Chambourcin
-This blush wine made the cheese much drier. It had a dry feeling from the initial blast and the smell was of black currant and pepper. I enjoyed the contrast from the other wines and it had great body.

8. Blaze - Vidal/Traminette
-This was one of the reserve wines that I wanted to try because it is one of two wines on the east coast that are made "Georgian Style", fermenting the stems and skins as well. This means that the wine is considered a noble wine. Personally, it was fun to go out on a limb and try this new type of (orange) wine, however the smell mimicked that of an old gym shoe and the taste was dull and boring.

These bottles only show a few of many awards that this winery has to show for itself.

When speaking with our waitress after the tasting, she explained that this winery in particular is one of the only places in Virginia that can say that each and every wine they have produced has won a medal, multiple of them gold medals. By the end of this tasting, we could not help ourselves but to take home two bottles to enjoy on another special occasion. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience and hope to do it again someday soon, even not for a grade.

Dinner - Italian Foods/Wine Pairing

On our snowy night in, my roommates and I decided that it would be the perfect time for my food/wine pairing experience. I had a few different types of wines that I will show you in a minute that we compared with different types of Italian foods to see what would pair nicely. We were extremely blown away by the huge difference a wine can make on your pallet instantaneously.

My roommates were enjoying the experience of being fed a free meal AND free wine.

As you can see, this experience was not only a fun way to eat different types of food together, but it was also a great bonding time for all of us. I prepared 3 different types of Italian food: pizza, Alfredo pasta, and orzo with broccoli.

My roommates and I each filled our plates with all three meals so that we could distinguish between the different wines individually.
Alfredo Pasta
Four Cheese Pizza

Orzo with Broccoli
After we had prepared the 3 meals, we tried each dish with the various wines. Below I have listed each wine with a picture, descriptions of each wine, and what paired best.
Gallo Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon - 2009 - 13% alcohol
We began our adventure with the Gallo Family, Cabernet Sauvignon. Immediately from the aroma, we could detect a strong dark cherry, currant, fruity, honey, and very woody smell. The tannins pushed through tremendously on the pallet but the longer we let it sit, the more mellow the overall feeling became. This was a dry and hot wine, which could be a byproduct of the higher alcohol content. The wine paired horribly with the pizza and Alfredo, however tasted marvelous with the buttery orzo. I believe this is because the creamy finish of the orzo helps to cut out the sharp tannins.
Gallo Family Vineyards Pinot Noir - 2009 - 12.5% alcohol
Next, we tried the Gallo Family Pinot Noir. After a swirl and sniff, we came to the conclusion that it was much smoother than the Cabernet Sauvignon. It did not have as much acidic bursts and did not have a dry finish anywhere near as harsh as the previous wine. As a household, we enjoyed this wine much more. When we compared the different foods, we noticed that the pizza was better than the orzo and pasta. I am guessing that this is the case because Pinot Noir pairs well with cheese. One day soon, I hope to try out that hypothesis.
Mosel Sonnenband Qualitatswein Riesling - 2011 - 9.5% alcohol

Lastly, we saved our sweet German Riesling for last. The smell was as if you had cut a fresh red pepper in half and put your nose in it, but take away the sting that comes along with the pepper. The citrus pushed through with a smell of clementine and grapefruit. The taste was extremely similar to the white grape sparkling cider that many people enjoy on New Years Eve. This wine was delightful and I would recommend to friends who enjoy sweeter wines but do not want a dessert wine, such as Mascato. Out of the foods, the buttery orzo worked well but I probably wouldn't pair them together in the future. I believe it was forced to work because the orzo had a smooth finish and combined with the citrus edge of the Riesling.

Overall, we enjoyed this exercise and will probably continue it in the future even when we are not being graded. Lovely night!

Tasting - Angove Zibibbo Sparkling Moscato

Variety: 100% Moscato
Region: Australia
Country: Australia
Year: N/A
Price: $15 - Sale - $7.95

Winery Review:  This is a tasty and generous Moscato  that opens with plush aromas of honey, peach syrup, white flower and fragrant exotic fruit. There’s a nice sensation of fullness and creaminess in the mouth that is backed by the foamy effervescence of this sparkling dessert wine.

My  Review:  I thoroughly enjoyed this wine from the sweet smell of Mama's baked apples to the light mango taste that added a nice zest at the end. The carbonation made for an exciting element and I tasted less heat from the wine. This would be nice for a toast or an after dinner treat.

Tasting - Fetzer Malbec

https://scholar.vt.edu/access/content/group/ce8bba1c-aeba-434d-a69b-1ef5d03b807f/VC%20tasting%202_6/Fetzer-Malbec.JPGName: Fetzer Malbec
Variety: 100% Malbec
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2011
Price: $7.95

Winery Review: Delicious Malbec is 100% from Mendoza, Argentina. It has a vibrant red color with violet tones. Subtle and delicious aromas with an intense mixture of red fruits, plum and cherry jam. On the palate it’s juicy and has intense wood-like tannins that make it a rustic, yet versatile wine. Long finish.

My  Review: This wine was much easier on the nose than the Garnacha. However, it was still too peppery for my taste. When I tasted the wine it was still extremely dry but I could stand the initial punch much more. Also the mid palate had a second kick of acid and tannin that I was not expecting. Good long finish. Full bodied wine.

Tasting - Tres Ojas Garnacha

Country: Spain
Year: 2011
Price: $6.95

Winery Review: "This semi-opaque ruby, custom cuvée of 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre is made specifically for Fran Kysela. It exhibits very fresh, ripe dark red fruit with very good palate weight and depth and ends with rich fruit notes. Made from organically grown grapes. Incredible value!"

My  Review: I did not care for this wine one bit. From the nose, to the taste, it was overpowering with pepper and acid. I barely tried a sip and my mouth was on fire as if I had tried a jalapeno pepper. It was also extremely dry and made my mouth feel tart. I know that many others cared for this wine, but I cannot say the same. My pallet must be much different.

Tasting - The Royal Old Vines Chenin Blanc

Variety: 100% Chenin Blanc
Region: Riebeek Kasteel
Country: South Africa
Year: 2012
Price: $7.95

Winery Review:  90 Points – Robert Parker
"One of the greatest buys I have tasted this year is this under $10, 100% Chenin Blanc from the Western Cape. A super flowery-scented nose includes notions of ripe honeydew melons and pears. This medium-weight, fresh, fruity, crisp, dry, textbook Chenin Blanc will provide immense pleasure over the next 12 months."

My  Review: Fruity on the nose with a slight honey mask. For a white wine, this had a pepper feel to the nose almost as a bitter flower. The taste had a soft edge but I could feel the heat pushing through in the finish.

Tasting - Norton Sauvignon Blanc

https://scholar.vt.edu/access/content/group/ce8bba1c-aeba-434d-a69b-1ef5d03b807f/VC%20tasting%202_6/Bodega-Norton-Sauv-Blanc.JPGName: Norton Sauvignon Blanc
Variety: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2012
Price: $12 Sale - $5.95

Winery Review: Aromas of pithy citrus and pineapple are decent but unrefined, while flavors of tangerine and pineapple are tropical, zesty and what they are. This is nothing more than a fresh, simple, citrus white to sip on the patio.

My  Review: My initial aroma of this wine was of a helium balloon. There was a tight and tart feel to the wine from the beginning. The taste had an overpowering lemon zest with a quick finish. Quick bursts of citrus.

I tried this wine without any food.
